Odds are, at some time you’ll need to visit a dentist and have some type of dental treatment. However, do you know what you should do—and avoid doing—after your treatment? Naturally, our dentist will tell you what you should do after your treatment, but we’re happy to give you a few ideas on what you should expect after common treatments.
As you may know, a filling is a fairly simple treatment that can be completed in one appointment. However, after you have a cavity placed, we recommended staying away from hot and cold foods. There are a few reasons that you should avoid foods with extreme temperatures. You see, hot and cold temperatures can actually damage your new filling. Secondly, hot and cold foods can also result in your teeth being sensitive to the temperature extremes.
Similarly, there are a few things you’ll want to do after your crown placed. After you receive a crown, avoid biting down on it for at least an hour. The cement that keeps your crown in place needs time to harden. We recommend avoiding sticky sweets like taffy, as they can pull your crown off. Also, please be aware that you may experience some sensitivity for a few days.
Finally, if you have a tooth extraction, there are a few general rules you should follow. For example, you should keep your mouth firmly closed to apply pressure to your gauze and prevent bleeding. Avoid using a straw, smoking, and using pipes for at least 24 hours. You should also remember to apply ice packs periodically to reduce swelling, though you shouldn’t keep them on your cheek for more than ten minutes.
