Brushing your teeth twice each day and flossing at least once is the foundation of an effective daily oral hygiene routine. If food particles, sugar residue, and plaque aren’t removed from your teeth on a daily basis, they can quickly harden into bacterial calculus. At the same time, the development of plaque acids in your mouth can also promote cavities.

Each time you brush your teeth it should take approximately two to three minutes. Working each tooth in small circles with a soft-bristled toothbrush and abrasive toothpaste will help clean the faces of the teeth. If possible try to use a fluoridated toothpaste that has been approved by the American Dental Association. The added fluoride will help to strengthen your tooth enamel to better prevent cavities.

When flossing be sure to thoroughly clean between each of your teeth as well as the gumline. Don’t forget to floss behind each of your rear molars. These areas are easy to forget, yet they can sometimes harbor significant bacterial deposits.

Once you are done brushing and flossing you might also want to brush your tongue to help reduce the bacterial plaque in your mouth.

Vigorously rinsing your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash can help evacuate loosened food particles from your mouth and kill any lingering bacteria.
