Dental implants are a replacement for the roots of a tooth, and have changed the face of dentistry in the last 25 years. They are a viable option for many people, if you are a good candidate. How important is age in factoring in whether or not a person can have a dental implant?

Adults are the best candidates for this kind of restoration, as you must have a fully developed jaw bone material to properly support the implant. If a young child loses a primary tooth, they need to wait for the permanent tooth to come in. If a child loses a permanent tooth, they won’t be able to get an implant until their jawbone has reached maturity. For girls this is typically around age 15, and for boys, 17. But there are other things a dentist can do if an implant isn’t possible, in the meantime.

Not just any adult is a candidate for an implant restoration. We will look at the following criteria to determine if you are a viable candidate:

Your overall general health: If you have diabetes or smoke you are at risk for implant failure. You need to be meticulous in caring for your teeth and gums to avoid gum disease which can deteriorate the bone.

The general condition of your mouth: The teeth and gums need to be in good health. If you have any dental decay, gum disease or broken teeth, they need to be fixed before a dental implant should be done. The mouth needs to be stable before implants can be put in. You need to maintain a very healthy mouth to support your dental implant.

Is there enough bone present to hold an implant? You will need to have the right amount of bone in the right place to support an implant. If there is not enough bone available, there are grafting techniques that can be done to support a dental implant.

The good news is, once you have been given the green light to receiving a dental implant, and with the right care and maintenance, your dental implant can last a lifetime. If you have any questions or think you might be a good candidate for implant restoration, please call Dr. Miller’s office staff at one of our locations near you and let us help restore your smile!
